ngalawa is the Swahili word for a type of traditional dug-out canoe, fashioned from a single tree trunk and either man-powered with a pole or wind-powered with the addition of outriggers and a lateen sail.
-ni is the Swahili suffix connoting location:
ngalawani - "the place of  the 'ngalawa'"
